Man-made Mud Volcano

A flippin’ man-made mud volcano has been erupting in Sidoarjo, Indonesia since 2006. “It appears that the flow will continue indefinitely and so far all efforts to stem the flow have failed”. I’ll come clean and say that I didn’t realize volcanoes were on the list of things we were making these days. Go us!

Fleet Foxes Finally

My first exposure to Fleet Foxes was when they opened for The Clientele late in the Summer of 2006. I remember feeling lucky to have discovered a new act that was very obviously destined for great success. Since then, a good friend and I have made it a point to see as many of their local Seattle shows as possible. We’ve probably missed two chances to see them perform - and felt really, really bad about it, let me tell you. In the mean time, they’ve released two EPs, changed their name from The Fleet Foxes to just Fleet Foxes, and finally (after almost two years of impatient waiting) pushed their first full length release over the wall.

The bottom line here is that they’ve really got no business being as talented as they are for their age (average band member age is probably around 22 years), there is no shortage of good press for their freshman release, and they’re on some sort of European / US tour at present.

In order to keep things simple, I am providing this list of suggested actions ordered from least to most expensive:

Zoe’s Tale

Happy day. Zoe’s Tale, a new book from John Scalzi, is on the way. He says, “I don’t consider it the fourth book in the Old Man’s War trilogy”. That’s good, because four books won’t fit in a trilogy. Well, maybe if that fourth book was very tiny. Then you might be able to squeeze it in somewhere between the other three. Or maybe fold it up and hide inside of one of the other books? I don’t know. I’m not an author, so I’ll leave that kind of thing to the experts.

Better is the news that he’s got at least a few other books queued up immediately behind this one. A very good friend introduced me to Scalzi earlier this year, and so far I’ve managed to read just two of his books. That said, I already consider him to be in the same league as Niven, Simak, and Heinlein.

Over the last week I’ve seen a *LOT* of ssh dictionary attacks on the new shell server. I’m really not interested in manually updating firewall filter rules every time someone rattles the door knobs, so that’s where DenyHosts comes in.

While it wouldn’t be too much work to script something that will handle this task, DenyHosts is especially interesting to me because of it’s Syncronization Mode. This optional feature allows for my local list of denied hosts to be updated based on the work of other DenyHosts users who have opted to contribute data to the project.

The Heavy

My favorite band of the day.

The Heavy, a dirty sounding “Experimental/Blues/Funk” act from Bath, England are planning to release their debut album - Great Vengeance & Furious Fire - in November ‘07. For now there’s just the three songs on their MySpace page and this video.

They’re starting to get some radio play on KEXP, so I hope we see them tour on this side of the planet at some point.
